How to Win Your First Project in Odesk

Before starting to apply for a job make sure that you've passed the oDesk Readiness Test and read the site's FAQs and policy. You need to read the resources presented to you, these are all important. It is kind of overwhelming at first; you may feel that you don't understand a thing. I know because I've been there. But don't worry, you will learn quickly as soon as you apply what you've read.
When I was just starting out, I really tried to read everything. Reading will help you familiarize with the system or at least give you an idea on how it is going to work. As you go along, you will certainly learn from actual experience; nevertheless, you may still find yourself going back to those resources for reference. Make sure that you've completed your profile. Provide the details of your working experiences and highlight your skills. Get certified by passing the skills test. Some employers are very particular with the skills test you've taken.

- Look for jobs that match your skills. Find projects that are suitable for you, where you are comfortable working at or where your strength or expertise is.
- Search from the most recent job posting. You never want to apply for a job that is a week older, which has over 100 applicants. Always on a look-out for new job posting. There is always a greater chance to be noticed when you are among the first who applied for the job.
- Read and understand the job description. Make sure that you understand what's the requirement. Some employer doesn't divulge everything in the job description, so if that's the case, you can always ask in your application. But If you think you can handle or deliver the job, then apply for it.
- Be specific in your proposal. When submitting your proposal, indicate how you are going to work with the project. If you have past working experience that you can relate the project to, you can briefly discuss about it in your letter. Before you hit submit, always make sure that you've proofread the letter.
- Never give up. If you are rejected once, twice or more, never give up. Some employers hire newbies.

ReplyDeleteHi! It takes patience to get your first project. Come to think of it, you have to compete with other freelancers who are also dying to have that project you want. Don't give up. Aim to apply first on projects and strive to make a great message or proposal.
